At least 27 people lost their lives in a fire that engulfed a venue in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

According to news agencies, Thai official Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed that 27 people died in a fire at a Bangkok venue on Sunday night.

The official told the media at the scene that the bodies of the 27 victims had been recovered, while several injured people were taken to the hospital, where their condition is being assessed.

He reported that, according to musicians present at the venue—located on the outskirts of Bangkok—smoke was seen coming from a fuse box near the stage; the power then cut out, followed by an explosion.

The Thai Prime Minister stated that most people, in a state of panic, ran to the restrooms at the back of the building, where there was no exit.

He added that, according to initial reports, smoke spread rapidly through the building.

Thai police announced on social media that the fire had been brought under control. Authorities have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the incident.
