Narendra Modi became the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in India's history, breaking the record of the country's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, for the longest tenure in power on Wednesday.
According to Arab News, Narendra Modi was first sworn in as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, and has now spent 4,399 consecutive days in power, while Jawaharlal Nehru's total tenure as elected Prime Minister lasted 4,398 days.
While Jawaharlal Nehru's tenure as prime minister dates back to India's independence in 1947, Modi's success dates back to the first general election in 1952.
"Public service is the highest measure of good governance," he said in a statement on social media platform 'X'. "Only that person wins the trust of the people who works tirelessly with humility, dedication and a sense of duty."
In 2024, Narendra Modi was elected Prime Minister of India for a third consecutive term after Jawaharlal Nehru. The victory further strengthened his Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and its coalition government, the National Democratic Alliance.
Under the leadership of 75-year-old Narendra Modi, India's economy reached $4.19 trillion by the end of last year, after which India overtook Japan in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) to become the world's fourth-largest economy.
Over the past 12 years, Narendra Modi has overseen major infrastructure projects and various welfare programs, which the government says have helped lift more than 250 million people out of extreme poverty.
He has also signed important free trade agreements with several countries, including the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
