Washington: US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized India's trade policy and made it clear that he has no plans to reduce tariffs imposed on India.
India has long pursued unilateral trade with the US and has hurt American manufacturers, says US President.
In a conversation with reporters in the Oval Office, President Trump said that India has long been trading unilaterally with the US and has hurt American manufacturers.
He said India has imposed the highest tariffs in the world on American products, which has caused many companies to suffer.
As an example, Trump cited the fact that American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson could not sell its products in India because India imposed a 200 percent tariff, which forced the company to set up a factory in India to avoid the tax.
The US president said that companies from all over the world are now investing in the United States, including car manufacturers from China, Mexico and Canada, as a result of his administration's policies.
Manufacturing by these companies in the United States will create new jobs and strengthen the American economy.
He added that India's recent offer that it was ready to cut its tariffs to zero came too late. This offer should have been made years ago.
