The head of India's controversial Hindu organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), says every family in the country should have three children.
According to the British news agency Reuters, the RSS leader warned of the long-term dangers of the declining birth rate.
India is the most populous country in the world, with a population of about 1.5 billion.
According to the 2025 report of the United Nations Population Fund, the fertility rate has fallen below the replacement level of two children per woman.
(Replacement level is the level at which new births are sufficient to maintain a stable population.) RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said "the population should be controlled, but adequately".
Speaking on the 100th anniversary of the RSS on Thursday, he suggested that "in national interest every family should have three children".
Hardline Hindu groups have expressed concern about the high birth rate among minority groups such as Muslims. However, data shows that even among Muslims in India, fewer children are being born than in the past.

Mohan Bhagwat also said that the birth rate among religious groups is declining.
Although the RSS officially describes itself as a cultural organization promoting Hindu values, it has considerable influence thanks to its extensive network of followers and volunteers.
Several of Narendra Modi's senior ministers, including the prime minister himself, are early RSS members.
Mohan Bhagwat has dismissed criticism that the RSS is against Muslims and other minorities.
He said: "Our ancestors and culture are the same. The ways of worship may differ, but our identity is one. Changing your religion does not change your community."
