Infertility rates among have risen sharply in recent years |
Infertility rates among men worldwide have risen sharply in recent years.
Now a scientist has shed light on one of the main possible reasons for this, and that is the excessive use of plastic.
According to research reports, sperm counts in men have declined at an average rate of one percent per year worldwide over the past 50 years, and infertility rates have increased.
Dr. Shanna Swan, a professor of public health at the Ashkenazi School of Medicine in the United States, said that factors such as obesity, longer sitting time and an aging population could be important potential factors causing infertility in men, but environmental factors play a more important role.
In 2017, Dr. Shanna and her team published the results of a study that found that sperm counts in men in North America, Europe, and Australia had dropped by about 60 percent between 1973 and 2011.
In 2023, the same team published research results for Africa, Asia, and South America that revealed even more surprising facts.
Now Dr. Shanna said that we have separated Western and non-Western countries for analytical purposes and that we have investigated the reproductive health problems of men everywhere.
He further said that we have also found that the situation is not good and research reports show that men's sperm count has declined significantly since 2000.
They said there is a link between the increasing rate of male infertility and the use of plastics since 1950.
According to him, the chemicals in plastic harm men's reproductive health, which has been confirmed in scientific reports.
Dr. Shanna said that phthalates are chemicals used to make plastic flexible and when you use something made of plastic, you are actually touching this chemical.
He further said that on the other hand, chemicals called bisphenols are also found in plastics, both of which affect the balance of hormones in men's bodies.
He said that we have not proven the link between chemicals in plastics and male infertility, and if you evaluate data from around the world, you can assess the effects of these chemicals.
He said that if immediate action is not taken regarding the use of plastic, the population decline could be a major challenge for humanity in the near future.
He issued this statement after the international community failed to agree on an agreement regarding the use of plastics in the Swiss city of Geneva.
