Jerusalem: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz clarified his statement regarding the possibility of an Israeli settlement in Gaza, saying the government has no intention of building new Jewish settlements in Gaza.
According to foreign news agencies, a recent statement by the Israeli defense minister sparked outrage after he suggested Israel's desire to resettle residents of Gaza in the future. Yisrael Katz later denied this interpretation, saying his comments had been misinterpreted.
He said the military presence in Gaza is mentioned only in a security context and its purpose is to protect Israeli citizens from potential threats, not to establish civilian settlements there.
On the other hand, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem described the Israeli defense minister's statement as a violation of the ceasefire agreement and said that it also contradicted the peace plan presented by US President Donald Trump.
It is noteworthy that the US-brokered peace initiative in Faisalabad in October called for a complete and gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and a halt to the construction of new settlements there.
The situation created by this issue comes at a time when Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump are expected to meet at the White House next week to discuss a ceasefire in Gaza and a peace plan.
