In Europe, sales of US electric carmaker Tesla fell 40 percent in July compared to last year, while Chinese company BYD made significant progress, overtaking Tesla for the first time.

The British news website The Guardian, citing the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), reported that Tesla sold 8,837 vehicles in the European Union, the European Free Trade Association and the United Kingdom last month, compared to 14,769 in July 2024.

In contrast, BYD's new vehicle registrations reached 13,503, up from 4,151 in the same month last year.

According to ACEA, BYD gained 1.2 percent of the European market share, while Tesla's share remains at 0.8 percent.

Chinese automakers, which offer relatively low-cost models, are rapidly expanding their presence in Europe.

According to a report by market research firm Jeto Dynamics, BYD sold more cars in Europe than Tesla for the first time in the spring of this year.

The British government has announced that the American company Ford will receive the highest subsidy for new electric vehicles, namely 3750 euros, which will apply to the Generation E (Gen-E) and e-Tourneo Courier models. In addition, 26 other models will receive a discount of 1500 euros.

This discount will only be given to vehicles costing €37,000 or less.

The UK Transport Minister, Heidi Alexander, said that "we are providing financial support to the public so that they can easily and affordably switch to electric vehicles. Our schemes promote competition in the market, strengthen the economy and increase jobs and skills".

On the other hand, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), vehicle production in the United Kingdom rose by 5.6% for the second consecutive month in July.

However, SSMT CEO Mike Howes warned that the market is currently uncertain, with consumer confidence declining, trade flows fluctuating and large-scale investments in new technologies continuing.

According to the ACEA report, 1 million new battery electric vehicles were registered in Europe in the first seven months of 2025, accounting for 15.6% of the European market. In contrast, hybrid electric vehicles remained more popular, with sales reaching 2.255 million units.

This growth was driven by rapid growth in electric vehicle registrations in key European countries. France saw a 30.5% increase in electric vehicle registrations, Spain 30.2%, Germany 10.7% and Italy 9.4%.

ACEA Director General Sigrid de Vries said that expanding public charging infrastructure, lowering charging prices and better coordinating purchase rebate schemes are essential to promote electric vehicles in Europe.
