Tajikistan has begun talks to deploy Russian troops for joint patrols on its border with Afghanistan.
Citing sources, the foreign news agency said Tajikistan is in talks with Russia and the Russian-led regional security alliance for joint patrols on the border with Afghanistan, allowing Russian troops to be deployed for joint patrols on the unstable border with Afghanistan.
It should be noted that five Chinese citizens were killed and five others injured in attacks from Afghanistan in the border area with Tajikistan last week.
Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon held emergency consultations with security chiefs on Monday, the news agency reported.
Sources from Tajikistan's Security Council told the news agency that authorities had discussed with Russia the possibility of sending troops from a Russian military base in Tajikistan to jointly monitor the Tajik-Afghan border.
The military base is Russia's largest overseas military installation in Tajikistan and is located near the capital Dushanbe.
According to sources, negotiations in this regard are underway and a decision is likely to be made this week.
Sources told the news agency that if the talks are successful, Russia will provide helicopters to monitor the 1,344-kilometer border with Afghanistan.
According to the news agency, Taliban officials in Afghanistan said they would cooperate with Tajikistan on border security.
