Afghan officials have claimed that at least 10 Afghan nationals who tried to enter Iran were killed by Iranian border guards.

According to foreign media, Mohammad Nasim Badri, a spokesman for the security command of Afghanistan's western Farah province, told state radio that the men had gone to Iran "in search of work" and entered Iranian territory through the Sheikh Abu Nasr Farahi border post on Monday night, where they were shot dead.

The spokesman said that all the dead were residents of Farah province and had crossed the border illegally.

Mohammad Nasim Badri also said that two Afghan citizens from the same group were still missing and that the investigation into the incident was ongoing, while there has been no reaction from Iran to the incident so far.

The incident comes amid rising tensions on the Iran-Afghanistan border. Over the past year, Iran has forcibly returned hundreds of Afghan refugees.
