Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has been sentenced to 21 years in jail for corruption.

The Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission has filed three cases against Sheikh Hasina for acquiring valuable land on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to 21 years in prison by a court on Thursday on corruption charges, a week after she was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity, according to the news agency.

The court said in its ruling that Sheikh Hasina considered government land as her personal property, controlled state resources and manipulated government operations to benefit herself and her close relatives.

The court also sentenced Sheikh Hasina's son and daughter, who live in the US, to 5.5 years in prison.

It may be recalled that Sheikh Hasina Wajid fled Bangladesh by helicopter to India on August 5, 2024, after more than 1,000 people were killed during student protests and violent demonstrations last year, where she has been living since.

Sheikh Hasina Wajid was also sentenced to death last week for crimes against humanity.
