Belgium Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot stated that his country will officially recognize Palestine at the UN assembly this month.

In a post on X on Tuesday, he wrote, "Palestine will be recognized at the UN assembly, and strict sanctions will also be imposed against the Israeli government.

" In July, French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed his intention to recognize a Palestinian state during the UN meeting scheduled for September 9-23 in New York.

More than a dozen other Western nations have encouraged similar actions.

Prevot explained that "this decision was made in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where most of the population has been displaced at least once due to Israeli attacks, and the United Nations has declared a famine in the region.

" He further noted that "Israel's breach of international law, the threat of genocide, and its failure to meet international obligations have compelled Belgium to make tough choices to increase pressure on the Israeli government and Hamas.

" Prevot added that "the aim is not to punish the Israeli people, but to ensure that their government complies with international and humanitarian law and that measures are taken to alter the current situation."
