Approximately 2,700 people died in England and Wales during May and June due to intense heat.
According to media reports, experts from Imperial College London, the Met Office, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine estimated that 2,700 people in England and Wales died from the heat in May and June.
Reports indicate that 550 people died between 21 and 29 May, while another 2,200 died between 18 and 28 June; the heat recorded in June also broke a 50-year record.
Professor Friederike Otto stated that the majority of deaths occurred in June, when temperatures rose to 37.7°C.
She added that even perfectly healthy people should not assume they are immune to the heat, noting that heatwaves could occur more frequently in the future.
According to experts, heatwaves are caused by a "heat dome." Extreme heat can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and other life-threatening conditions; it is a silent killer that can affect even healthy peoples.
