Freedom Ship: Will a mile-long floating city in the ocean become a reality?

Imagine a ship that is not just a ship, but a mile-long floating city where 80,000 people can live at once.

The concept was first proposed in the 1990s by American engineer Norman Nixon, but for three decades it remained limited to documents and drawings.

Now, a cruise line claims that demand for this 'Freedom Ship' has grown to such an extent that even building three such ships would be insufficient.

Freedom Cruise Line International CEO Roger Gooch told the British newspaper The Telegraph: “We are absolutely convinced that we can make it happen, but the most important thing is the management of the considerable capital.”

The company has also assembled a team of specialist designers and naval architects to implement the project.

Assembly to take place at sea

Even if the company manages to secure the necessary funds for this monumental project, its construction will be an extraordinary challenge.

This ship will be 10 times larger than the largest cruise ship in the world. Its structure is so large that no shipyard in the world can accommodate it, so its various parts will be made separately and assembled offshore.

This reusable ship will be 800 feet wide and 30 feet high, with a capacity for 50,000 permanent passengers and 10,000 tourists, while there will be 20,000 crew members to see them off.

If the ship cannot enter any port, small ships and boats will be used to bring and pick up passengers.

Hospitals, schools and medical research

It will literally be a floating city with its own hospital, school, bank, shops and restaurants.

According to Roger Gooch, the company wants business people to buy or rent space on the ship, just as they would in a society on Earth.

The most exciting aspect of the project is the state-of-the-art hospital.

Since the ship will sail in international waters – outside the jurisdiction of traditional government laws and regulatory bodies – several medical research institutions have shown great interest in conducting independent research there.

If this dream ever becomes a reality, the ship will likely be nuclear-powered.

However, to launch this maritime city, the company will first need to raise more than $16 billion in capital.
