Bulgarian Orthodox Christians have asked Sultan Abdul Aziz of the Ottoman Empire to preserve their place of worship.
The beautiful city of Istanbul, located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, preserves hundreds of years of history alongside the modern era.
Bulgarian Orthodox Christians living on the banks of the famous Golden Horn Strait between the city of Istanbul and the Ottoman Empire have asked Sultan Abdul Aziz of the Ottoman Empire to preserve their place of worship.
The Sultan decided to make the old church on the banks of the Golden Horn in the Balad neighborhood a unique church for Bulgarian Christians.
Jamuri, a tour guide in Istanbul, said that an order was issued for this purpose in 1870 and a map was prepared by order of Sultan Abdulaziz. For this purpose, iron was arranged from Vienna and Austria and brought to Istanbul via the Black Sea.
Large pieces of the beautifully designed St. Stephen's Church were brought from Vienna to Turkey and a unique church was built by connecting these iron pieces on the banks of the Golden Horn in the Balad district of Istanbul.
The arch of the church was gilded with donations from the community with the support of the St. Stephen's Church Foundation in Bulgaria.
The renovation of the church was inaugurated in 2018 by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bulgarian Prime Minister Bayraktar Borisov.
This 19th-century iron masterpiece is the only modern Bulgarian Orthodox church built of iron in the world.
