Two National Guard members seriously injured in shooting near White House, suspect arrested as Afghan citizen

Two National Guard members have been shot near the White House in the US state of Washington. 

According to US media, a man opened fire on National Guard members near the White House, seriously wounding them.

According to the report, a large contingent of police arrived at the scene after the shooting. The two officers who were injured in the shooting were immediately transferred to the hospital and their condition is considered critical. 

The police said a suspect who opened fire has been arrested. According to US authorities, the suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lucknowal. Rahmanullah came to the United States in 2021. 

According to US media reports, the White House was temporarily locked down after the shooting. The area around the scene was also cordoned off and police advised people to avoid the area near I Street.

The US Secretary of Homeland Security said that we are gathering information with law enforcement agencies. 

US President Donald Trump declared the incident an act of terrorism. During his speech, he also ordered a re-examination of every foreign national who entered the US from Afghanistan during the Biden era.

The US president also issued a statement on social media regarding the incident. In the message, he called the perpetrator of the attack an animal and warned that anyone who shoots at National Guard personnel will pay a heavy price. 

Both officers were from the state of West Virginia,The governor of West Virginia said he was in constant contact with federal authorities and that the investigation was ongoing. 

Elsewhere, flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were canceled due to security concerns following the shooting, but normal operations resumed at the airport after a brief closure.
