In a statement, a Prada spokesperson said that their company “has always respected craftsmanship, culture and design traditions.”

Italian fashion brand Prada has admitted that its new slipper design was inspired by the Kolhapuri slippers made in India.

The slippers worn by models at Milan Fashion Week last week looked exactly like those worn for decades in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. A controversy erupted in India after Prada used the slippers at Milan Fashion Week.

Prada called these slippers "leather shoes" but did not mention their connection to India, after which accusations of cultural appropriation against the Italian fashion brand surfaced in India as well.
