As I perused the latest street style photos from New York Fashion Week, there was one styling trick I kept seeing over and over again, and thankfully it’s rooted in reality. This wardrobe staple is the kind of thing you’d expect to see in Virgin River rather than at fashion week the epicenter of competitive peacock fashion as it involves little more than a sweater or a lumberjack shirt tucked in around the waist.
You don’t need a new Chloé Paddington or a pair of Miu Miu moccasin boots to emulate this street style look; all you need is a basic crewneck or checked shirt. It’s this delightful normality that sets it apart from the kind of full-on, front-row styling that usually requires access to PR samples to achieve. The New York-trending checked shirt costs £95, and from Cos.
'90s-style plaid shirts appeared in the spring/summer 2025 collections at Acne Studios, Bottega Veneta, Burberry and others, and the Kurt Cobain staple continues to define the fall 2025 vibe. While New York saw plenty of plaid shirts draped artfully around the waist, the look is also achieved with colorful crew necks and neutral cable knits. It's a natural extension of the scarf-over-everything trend that's become a staple of European summer style this year - a light layer will create a silhouette similar to that of a traditional Pucci scarf tied over jeans.

Kendall Jenner also rocked her look at New York Fashion Week this weekend, wearing a white blazer draped over her low-waisted black pants. The use of minimalist base colors and a monochromatic color palette makes it feel very '90s Gwyneth. As with the scarf trend, you want it to look artfully draped in a loose way, but with a strong enough knot so that you don't have to remove layers as you walk.
To help you wear this look in a deliberate, never careless way, check out the styling tips we've picked from the New York street style crowd below.
Looped over skirts:
A plaid shirt tied around the waist might seem like a natural casual look, usually paired with baggy jeans or cargo pants. But at New York Fashion Week, shirts are worn layered over more formal, tailored skirts. This generally looks best with a midi or maxi length, as you want to create a layered effect, rather than the shirt or sweater covering a miniskirt.
A splash of color:
It's an easy way to add a little color to an outfit, especially if it's too basic. Red was a popular choice in New York this week.

When in doubt, go grunge and dress like Kurt Cobain (or Travis from Clueless) by wearing a 90s-inspired plaid flannel shirt over slacks or cargo pants. To add a bit of sparkle to your look, opt for a soft t-shirt and avoid anything ripped.
High-waisted:
Your extra layer will look stylish worn below your hips like Kendall Jenner, but tying it at the waist can add extra shape to a look. Another trick is to have the buttons on the side, at an angle, so the shirt or sweater falls almost like a wrap dress.
