The United Kingdom has announced major changes to its immigration laws following changes to its asylum policy.

Immigrants who come to the UK legally may have to wait up to 20 years for permanent residency, while those who come illegally will have to wait up to 30 years for permanent residency.

In a debate on immigration policy, Home Affairs Minister Shabana Mahmood told Parliament that those seeking permanent residency must have no criminal record, be proficient in English at A-level and have no debts in the country. The proposed new rules would also apply to people already in the UK.

Under the proposal, the settlement period will also vary for different categories. Home Affairs Minister Shabana Mahmood said the period of residence in the UK before applying for permanent residency would be increased from 5 to 10 years.

Shabana Mahmood said that doctors and nurses working for the NHS will only be able to apply for permanent residency after 5 years, intelligent individuals will be able to apply for permanent residency through the fast-track route, and high-income earners and entrepreneurs will only be able to apply for permanent residency after 3 years.

Shabana Mahmood said she wants to replace Britain's broken immigration system with a fair and inclusive one. My parents also came to Britain for a better life and then became local citizens.
