Until now, Tokyo was considered the largest city in the world in terms of population.
But now the capital of a Muslim country has been given this title.
The Indonesian capital, Jakarta, has become the world's largest city, with a population of 42 million, according to a new United Nations report.
Tokyo became the world's largest city in 2000, but its population growth rate has slowed over the past 25 years and has now dropped from first to third place.
In second place is Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, with a population of 37 million.
This was reported in a report by the Population Division of the United Nations Organization for Economic and Social Affairs.
Tokyo's population is currently 33 million, while in fourth and fifth place are the Indian capital New Delhi and the Chinese city of Shanghai, with a population of 33 million each.
Another Chinese city, Guangzhou, is in sixth place with a population of 28 million.
The Egyptian city of Cairo is in seventh place with a population of 26 million.
The Philippine city of Manila is in eighth place with a population of 25 million, the Indian city of Kolkata is in ninth place with a population of 23 million, and the South Korean city of Seoul is in tenth place with a population of 22 million.
According to the World Bank, Dhaka is expected to become the world's most populous city by 2050, while Tokyo's population will decline further in the next 25 years.
According to research, nine of the 10 most populous cities in the world are currently located in Asia, and Cairo is the only city on the list that is not part of Asia.
Traffic jams, air pollution, and flooding are common problems in Jakarta.
That's why the Indonesian government announced in 2019 that a new capital would be built in the Borneo region of Java island.
But the project is still under construction and has been delayed due to a lack of funding.

According to a United Nations report, 45 percent of the world's 8.2 billion people will live in cities by 2025.
Similarly, the number of cities with populations of 10 million or more in 1975 was only 8, which has now increased to 33.
Nineteen of these cities are in Asia.
