Kunar and Nangarhar among provinces hardest hit by quake.

A strong earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan on Sunday evening, the third to hit the region in the past four days.

The latest quake had a magnitude of 6.2 and its epicenter was in Shiwa district, near the Pakistani border, according to the German Geosciences Research Center. The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles).

Initial reports after the earthquake showed damage in the Barkish Kot area, but details are currently being gathered from the affected areas.

The provinces hardest hit by the earthquake include Kunar and Nangarhar, where thousands of homes were completely destroyed.

According to the Taliban administration, 2,205 people have been killed and at least 3,640 injured in three earthquakes that have struck the country in the past four days.

Rescue teams are searching for people buried under the rubble.

On Thursday, rescue workers pulled bodies from the rubble of collapsed houses, while displaced people are forced to live in extremely poor conditions in the open air.

The United Nations and other international aid agencies have warned that resources to provide food, medical aid and shelter to affected areas are dwindling.

The lives of thousands of victims are at risk, while access to remote areas is also facing serious problems.

It should be noted that Sunday's first earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.0, is considered one of the worst to hit Afghanistan in recent years, causing widespread destruction in Kunar and Nangarhar.

This was followed by a second earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on Tuesday, which affected rescue operations and cut off communications with some rural areas due to falling rocks from the mountains.
